The Philharmonik - Blue Note LA (Aug. 18)
New Hollywood jazz venue Blue Note LA opens its doors on August 14 and you can expect performances nightly throughout the rest of the month. On Monday, August 18, The Philharmonik, who won last year’s Tiny Desk Contest for the song “What’s It All Mean?” stops by for two shows, at 7pm and 9:30pm. Table seating at the venue is all ages, but tickets for bar seating are 21+ only.

Rachmaninoff Under the Stars - Hollywood Bowl (Aug. 19 & 21)
Pianist Daniil Trifonov returns to the Hollywood Bowl to perform Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor, Op. 18 for Rachmaninoff Under the Stars on Tuesday, August 19. The program, conducted by Daniel Harding, will also include Rachmaninoff’s Second Symphony. This is the first of a two-night event at the Bowl. For the second night, on Thursday, August 21, Trifonov will perform the composer’s Third Piano Concerto. Gates open two hours before the 8pm performances.

Herbie Hancock - Hollywood Bowl (Aug. 20)
The LA Phil’s Creative Chair for Jazz, Herbie Hancock, takes the Hollywood Bowl stage on Wednesday, August 20. Catch the legend in concert, where he’ll be joined by Terence Blanchard (trumpet), James Genus (bass), Lionel Loueke (guitar, vocals) and Jaylen Petinaud (drums). Gates open two hours before the 8pm showtime.

"It’s Never Over, Jeff Buckley" - Philosophical Research Society (Aug. 22)
Oscar-nominated filmmaker Amy Berg explores the brief-but-brilliant life of singer-songwriter Jeff Buckley in a new documentary that includes previously unseen footage, as well as interviews with those who were close to him. It’s Never Over, Jeff Buckley screens at Philosophical Research Society on Friday, August 22. Tickets at Eventbrite.

Maestro of the Movies: Celebrating the Music of John Williams - Hollywood Bowl (Aug. 22-24)
A highlight of the Hollywood Bowl’s summer season, Maestro of the Movies: Celebrating the Music of John Williams returns for three nights beginning Friday, August 22. Conductor David Newman will lead the LA Phil through selections that include music from beloved films like Jaws, E.T., Superman, Raiders of the Lost Ark and, of course, Star Wars.

"Psycho" - Hollywood Forever (Aug. 23)
Cinespia screens Alfred Hitchcock’s horror classic, Psycho, at Hollywood Forever on Saturday, August 23. Gates open at 6:45pm, but showtime isn’t until 8:30pm, so bring a picnic to enjoy before the terror begins.

Off the 405: Emile Mosseri - Getty Center (Aug. 23)
On Saturday, August 23, the Getty Center wraps up its summer music series, Off the 405, with a performance by LA-based composer Emile Mosseri and an opening DJ set by omniscuro. Mosseri earned an Academy Award nomination for his score to Minari and also composed the acclaimed music for The Last Black Man in San Francisco and Kajillionaire. For his live shows, Mosseri weaves together material from his albums and film scores, creating intimate, genre-defying performances. Free with RSVP at the Getty website.

VinylCon - California Market Center (Aug. 23-24)
Get ready for some crate-digging when VinylCon takes over the California Market Center in Downtown LA on Saturday, August 23, and Sunday, August 24. The weekend-long event is geared towards record collectors, but also includes vendors who carry music released on other formats, as well as music memorabilia. Expect to hear DJs playing vinyl sets while you shop, with a lineup that includes Cut Chemist, House Shoes, Psycho Les and more.

Envisioning the Skies: A Short History of Astronomical Films - Mount Wilson Observatory (Aug. 23)
Mount Wilson’s Matinees on the Mountain series continues on Saturday, August 23, with a showcase of astronomical films going back to the 19th century. Presented with LA Filmforum, Envisioning the Skies includes images from astronomers like Jules Janssen and Bernard Lyot, as well as modern footage. The screening takes place in the 256-seat auditorium at the famed, mountaintop auditorium. For driving directions, follow the directions on the Mount Wilson website.

This is one of just five Z anniversary shows they’ll be playing on the current North American jaunt, so fans will not want to miss this all-ages show. New York-based Melt opens the night.

The pair fall too deep into their cute courtship to care that every adult in their lives is trying to locate them before a dangerous storm makes landfall. Featuring first-time actors Jared Gilman and Kara Hayward as the charming tweens in a budding romance, this off-kilter camp story will screen in the Ted Mann Theater on Saturday, August 23 as part of the Academy Museum's ongoing Family Matinee series.
