Los Angeles-area hotel development is heating up with the weather, as summertime will mean a whole new batch of hotels for visitors and staycationers alike to try out. From the Proper Hotels’ expansion to Downtown LA to other new offerings in Hollywood and Venice, LA’s newest hotels will be represented by a broad range of both tried-and-true brands and independent and boutique badges for those looking for a less traditional experience. Check out what’s in store below.
Hotels Recently Opened
The Thompson Hotels lifestyle brand, which previously operated the Hollywood Roosevelt and is owned by Hyatt, has returned to the area, with a new-build property on Wilcox Avenue between Hollywood and Sunset Boulevards. The 200-room hotel, built by Dream Hollywood developer Relevant Group, features a rooftop deck with a pool.
GODFREY HOTEL HOLLYWOOD
The Godfrey Hotel lifestyle chainlet, which has properties in Chicago and Boston, has opened a property on Hollywood’s Cahuenga Corridor near Sunset Boulevard. The hotel features 220 rooms as well as four bars and a gastropub/steakhouse called About Last Knife.
PENDRY WEST HOLLYWOOD
Pendry West Hollywood, which is part of the Montage Hotels & Resorts offshoot brand that debuted in San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter in February 2017, opened in April at the Sunset Strip site formerly occupied by House of Blues. The Pendry West Hollywood has149 rooms, while the project also includes 40 luxury condominiums, a live-entertainment venue, a bowling alley and two food and beverage concepts from Chef Wolfgang Puck.
VENICE V HOTEL
Venice Beach’s only beachfront hotel is now open with 30 rooms and six suites. The hotel, redeveloped from a 106-year-old building, includes a rooftop bungalow and is about five blocks from Abbot Kinney Boulevard.
FOUND HOTEL SANTA MONICA
FOUND Hotels, the new chainlet headed by former Rosewood and Fairmont executive Lew Wolff, opened the FOUND Hotel Santa Monica in West Los Angeles in February. The 88-room property includes traditional rooms, shared rooms and extended-stay facilities.
London-based chainlet the Hoxton made its Los Angeles entry in October 2019 with the redevelopment of the old Los Angeles Railway Building in DTLA. The Broadway site has 164 rooms and a spa as well as a lobby restaurant called Sibling Rival and a rooftop Mediterranean-cuisine eatery called Pilot.
Soho House, which offers 23 membership-only luxury lodging facilities worldwide, opened its Soho Warehouse in downtown Los Angeles in October 2019. Located on Santa Fe Street in the Arts District, the hotel was redeveloped out of a 100-year-old building that previously served as a rehearsal space and recording studio for musicians. Soho Warehouse has 48 rooms and a ground-floor restaurant.
SILVER LAKE POOL & INN
L.A.-based Palisociety added to its luxury-boutique hotel chainlet in November 2019 with the opening of the 54-room Silver Lake Pool & Inn. Redeveloped out of an old apartment building, the hotel includes Italian restaurant Marco Polo.
Pacifica Hotels redeveloped the Downtown site that formerly housed the Ritz Milner Hotel as the Wayfarer Downtown LA. The 156-room hotel, which features lobby restaurant Gaslighter Social Club as a rooftop lounge and firepit, opened on Flower Street in February 2020.
WEST HOLLYWOOD EDITION
The first U.S. West Coast property under Marriott International and Ian Schrager’s Edition lifestyle brand opened on the famed Sunset Strip in West Hollywood in October 2019. Developed by the Witkoff Group and New Valley, the hotel has 190 rooms, including 48 suites and two penthouses, and 20 luxury condominiums. The hotel also boasts a rooftop pool, a restaurant and a six-treatment-room spa.
Proper Hospitality, which opened its Santa Monica Proper in 2019 and is set to open the Downtown L.A. Proper in July, debuted the 250-room Hotel June at the old site of the Custom Hotel near LAX in June 2020.
Hotel Mariposa, a new-build upscale-boutique hotel, opened in August 2020 with 94 rooms. The pet-friendly property has an eco-conscious, wellness emphasis.
THE GLENMARK HOTEL
The Glenmark Hotel, which is part of Marriott International’s Tribute Portfolio collection, opened on Glendale’s Brand Boulevard in July 2020. The 85-room hotel, which is operated by San Diego-based Azul Hospitality Group, features 7,900 square feet of meeting space as well as coffee from Intelligentsia Coffee Roasters.

LE MERIDIEN PASADENA ARCADIA
Marriott International’s Le Meridien upper-upscale brand will open a 234-room hotel across the street from Santa Anita Racetrack in June. Managed by Pacifica Hotels, the hotel will include more than 14,000 square feet of meeting space and will offer poolside food and beverage delivery.
HYATT HOUSE/HYATT PLACE LAX
A duel-branded Hyatt select-service property will open on Century Boulevard near Los Angeles International Airport this fall. The Hyatt House LAX and Hyatt Place LAX will have a combined 401 rooms. It's also going to be the only property in the LAX Corridor with a rooftop pool and bar.
DOWNTOWN L.A. PROPER
Proper Hotels will open a second Southern California hotel at the downtown Los Angeles site of the former Case Hotel in September 2021. The 13-story property, which was built in 1924, will have 148 rooms as well as a rooftop pool and two restaurants overseen by James Beard Award-winning local chef Suzanne Goin and Caroline Styne (Lucques, a.o.c., Tavern).
Amsterdam-based hotel specialist CitizenM will make its West Coast debut September 2021 with its Los Angeles property. The Downtown site, located at Fourth and Spring Street, will have 315 rooms. Guests will be surrounded by artwork by internationally renowned artists, both in-room and in shared spaces, such as wallpaper by Friedrich Kunath in the living room, and five pieces from the KRC Collection including a video art installation by The One Minutes.
FAIRMONT CENTURY PLAZA
AccorHotels’ Fairmont badge will take over the landmark Century Plaza hotel in Century City when the property completes its $2.5 billion redevelopment. Scheduled to open this September, the Fairmont Century Plaza will have 400 rooms and 63 luxury residences, down from the hotel’s 726 rooms when it shuttered in 2016. The project, which will also have 290 luxury residences in the project’s two new 46-story towers, will include a 14,000-square-foot spa and 24,000 square feet of private-event space as well as four food and beverage options.
The Shay, a boutique hotel which is part of the 500,000-square-foot Ivy Station mixed-use project in Culver City, is slated to open this fall. The 148-room hotel, which will be operated by Hyatt as part of its Destination Hotels group, will feature a 5,000-square-foot rooftop space with a pool, restaurant and lounge. The hotel will also include the restaurant etta, helmed by Chicago chef Danny Grant.
EQUINOX LOS ANGELES (2022)
High-end fitness center operator Equinox, which opened its first branded hotel in New York in July, will add a Los Angeles property in 2022. The 309-room luxury hotel will be part of The Grand, the $1 billion mixed-use project in Downtown LA’s Bunker Hill that will be designed by Frank Gehry.
AC/MOXY HOTEL (2022)
The Fig + Pico Conference Center multi-hotel project in Downtown Los Angeles is slated to include L.A.'s first hotel under Marriott International’s Moxy brand as well as a property under Marriott’s AC Hotels badge. The project will have 727 rooms when it opens in late 2022.
HYATT UNBOUND COLLECTION HOTEL (2022)
A 64-room hotel that will be part of Hyatt’s Unbound Collection will open on Hollywood’s Cahuenga Corridor next year. Operated by Interstate Hotels & Resorts, the hotel will feature both a ground-floor restaurant and a rooftop pool deck and lounge.
THE WHISKY HOTEL (2022)
Restaurateur Adolfo Suaya (Gaucho Grill) is redeveloping a site near Hollywood’s Cahuenga Corridor as a 134-room whiskey-themed hotel. The Whisky Hotel will include whiskey sommeliers and whiskey-filled minibars when it opens in 2022.
