As travel-starved consumers resume exploring Los Angeles, some of the world’s most renowned traditional and boutique hotel brands will continue to expand their local footprint. Los Angeles will regain its place as one of the most visited U.S. cities by both domestic and international travelers, and hotels in areas such as Downtown, Hollywood, Century City and the South Bay will be eager to show off their new properties. Read below for some of the hot properties to check in next:
Hotels Recently Opened
London-based chainlet The Hoxton made its Los Angeles entry in October 2019 with the redevelopment of the old Los Angeles Railway Building in DTLA. The Broadway site has 164 rooms, a spa, and two restaurants from the acclaimed Sunday Hospitality - the all-day Sibling Rival and the rooftop Mediterranean-inspired Pilot.
Soho House, which offers 23 membership-only luxury lodging facilities worldwide, opened its Soho Warehouse in October. Located on Santa Fe Street in the Downtown LA Arts District, the hotel was redeveloped out of a 100-year-old building that previously served as a rehearsal space and recording studio for musicians. Soho Warehouse has 48 rooms and serves global Soho House favorites in the House Kitchen, Mediterranean-Italian in the outdoor House Garden, and poolside favorites on the rooftop.
SILVER LAKE POOL & INN
LA-based Palisociety added to its luxury-boutique hotel chainlet in November 2019 with the opening of the 54-room Silver Lake Pool & Inn.
Redeveloped out of an old apartment building, the hotel includes Italian restaurant and bar, Marco Polo.
Pacifica Hotels redeveloped the Downtown site that formerly housed the Ritz Milner Hotel as the Wayfarer Downtown LA. The 156-room hotel, which features lobby restaurant Gaslighter Social Club as well as a rooftop lounge and firepit, opened on Flower Street in February 2020.
WEST HOLLYWOOD EDITION
The first West Coast property under Marriott International and Ian Schrager’s EDITION lifestyle brand opened on the famed Sunset Strip in October. Located at Sunset Boulevard and Doheny Drive in West Hollywood, the hotel features 190 rooms (including 48 suites and two penthouses) and 20 luxury residences. The hotel also boasts a rooftop pool, signature restaurant, basement club and a six-treatment-room spa.
SANTA MONICA PROPER
Proper Hotels, the new brand headed by former Viceroy Hotels chief Brad Korzen, made its Southern California debut in June 2019 with the Santa Monica Proper. The 271-room hotel was redeveloped out of a historic 1928 structure and an adjacent new building at Wilshire Boulevard and 7th Street. Helmed by Sqirl’s Jessica Koslow and Gabriela Camara (Contramar, Cala), the hotel’s on-site restaurant Onda serves seafood of the Pacific that showcases ingredients from Mexico and LA farmers markets.
Proper Hospitality, which opened its Santa Monica Proper in 2019 and is set to open the Downtown L.A. Proper this spring, debuted the 250-room Hotel June at the old site of the Custom Hotel near LAX in June 2020.
Hotel Mariposa, a new-build upscale-boutique hotel, opened in August 2020 with 94 rooms. The pet-friendly property has an eco-conscious, wellness emphasis.
AC HOTEL LOS ANGELES SOUTH BAY
Marriott International’s AC Hotels brand entered the Los Angeles International Airport area in July 2019 with the debut of the AC Hotel Los Angeles South Bay. Conveniently located in El Segundo, the six-story, 180-room hotel features AC Kitchen & Lounge and the rooftop restaurant and bar, FLORA.
THE GLENMARK HOTEL
The Glenmark Hotel, which is part of Marriott International’s Tribute Portfolio collection, opened on Glendale’s Brand Boulevard in July 2020. The 85-room hotel, which is operated by San Diego-based Azul Hospitality Group, features 7,900 square feet of meeting space as well as coffee from Intelligentsia Coffee Roasters.

PENDRY WEST HOLLYWOOD
Pendry, the Montage Hotels & Resorts offshoot brand that debuted in San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter in February 2017, will make its Los Angeles-area entry in March when the modern-luxury hotel is built at the Sunset Strip site formerly occupied by House of Blues. The Pendry West Hollywood will have 149 rooms, while the project will also include 40 luxury condominiums, a live-entertainment venue, a bowling alley and two food and beverage concepts from Chef Wolfgang Puck.
FAIRMONT CENTURY PLAZA
AccorHotels’ Fairmont badge will take over the landmark Century Plaza hotel in Century City when the property completes its $2.5 billion redevelopment. Scheduled to open in May, the Fairmont Century Plaza will have 400 rooms and 63 luxury residences, down from the hotel’s 726 rooms when it shuttered in 2016. The project, which will also have 290 luxury residences in the project’s two new 46-story towers, will include a 14,000-square-foot spa and 24,000 square feet of private-event space as well as four food and beverage options.
DOWNTOWN LA PROPER
Proper Hotels will open a second Southern California hotel at the downtown Los Angeles site of the former Case Hotel this spring. The 13-story Downtown LA Proper will have 151 rooms as well as a rooftop pool and two restaurants overseen by James Beard Award-winning local chef Suzanne Goin and Caroline Styne (Lucques, a.o.c., Tavern).
GODFREY HOTEL HOLLYWOOD
The Godfrey Hotel lifestyle chainlet, which has properties in Chicago and Boston, will open a property on Hollywood’s Cahuenga Corridor near Sunset Boulevard in early 2020. The hotel will have 220 rooms as well as four bars and a gastropub/steakhouse called About Last Knife.
HYATT HOUSE/HYATT PLACE LAX
A duel-branded Hyatt select-service property will open on Century Boulevard near Los Angeles International Airport this spring. The Hyatt House LAX and Hyatt Place LAX will have a combined 440 rooms.
The Thompson Hotels lifestyle brand, which previously operated the Hollywood Roosevelt and is owned by Hyatt, will return to the area in June 2020 with a new-build property on Wilcox Avenue between Hollywood and Sunset Boulevards. The 200-room hotel, to be built by Dream Hollywood developer Relevant Group, will have a rooftop deck with a pool.
Amsterdam-based micro-room hotel specialist CitizenM will debut in Los Angeles in this summer. The Downtown site, located at Fourth and Spring Street, will have 315 rooms.
The Shay, a boutique hotel which is part of the 500,000-square-foot Ivy Station mixed-use project in Culver City, is slated to open this summer. The 148-room hotel, which will be operated by Hyatt as part of its Destination Hotels group, will feature a 5,000-square-foot rooftop space with a pool, restaurant and lounge. The hotel will also include the restaurant etta, helmed by Chicago chef Danny Grant.
JORDAN SAN GABRIEL
The former Hyatt Place property in San Gabriel is being redeveloped and rebranded under Hilton’s Curio Collection as the Jordan San Gabriel. The 212-room hotel, which is located across the street from the San Gabriel Square Mall, is slated to open in October.
EQUINOX LOS ANGELES (2022)
High-end fitness center operator Equinox, which opened its first branded hotel in New York in July, will add a Los Angeles property in 2022. The 309-room luxury hotel will be part of The Grand, the $1 billion mixed-use project in Downtown LA’s Bunker Hill that will be designed by Frank Gehry.
AC/MOXY HOTEL (2022)
The Fig + Pico Conference Center multi-hotel project in Downtown Los Angeles is slated to include L.A.'s first hotel under Marriott International’s Moxy brand as well as a property under Marriott’s AC Hotels badge. The project will have 727 rooms when it opens in late 2022.
HYATT UNBOUND COLLECTION HOTEL (2022)
A 64-room hotel that will be part of Hyatt’s Unbound Collection will open on Hollywood’s Cahuenga Corridor next year. Operated by Interstate Hotels & Resorts, the hotel will feature both a ground-floor restaurant and a rooftop pool deck and lounge.
THE WHISKY HOTEL (2022)
Restaurateur Adolfo Suaya (Gaucho Grill) is redeveloping a site near Hollywood’s Cahuenga Corridor as a 134-room whiskey-themed hotel. The Whisky Hotel will include whiskey sommeliers and whiskey-filled minibars when it opens in 2022.
