True to Southern California’s reputation as the ultimate summer destination, the newest hotels in Los Angeles and its surrounding communities will not disappoint as school lets out and the temperatures rise. From the burgeoning nightlife and food scene of Downtown LA to the beachside vibes of Venice and Santa Monica to starmaking turns in Beverly Hills and Hollywood, the region has no shortage of hotels that have either been recently opened or reimagined. Here are a few worth checking out.
Hotels Recently Opened
AC HOTEL DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES/MOXY DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES
Marriott International’s dual-branded AC Hotel Downtown Los Angeles and Moxy Downtown Los Angeles hotels have opened in a 37-story tower across the street from Crypto.com Arena. Totaling 727 rooms, the hotels, located on the corner of Figueroa Street and Pico Boulevard, feature a dozen new restaurants and bars, including Houston Hospitality’s Level 8 and the La Lo La Rooftop tapas bar on the building’s 34th floor, as well as 13,000 square feet of meeting space.. The Moxy property is Los Angeles’s first under that Marriott brand.
THE WINFIELD and THE CRAFTSMAN
Sonder Holdings has opened two apartment-style hotels in Downtown LA’s Jewelry District. The Winfield is a 125-unit property that includes 34 studios and 70 one-bedroom units. The property was redeveloped out of what was the former flagship store for men’s clothier Foreman & Clark, and features a Hilltop Coffee + Kitchen outlet. Three blocks away from The Winfield, Sonder also opened The Craftsman. The 110-unit apartment-style hotel is in what was previously the 101-year-old Lane Mortgage Building.
Stile Downtown Los Angeles
The Stile Downtown Los Angeles as reopened at the Downtown LA site of what was previously the Ace Hotel. Operated by Kasa Living, the 182-room property features a rooftop pool and 5,000 square feet of meeting space. The hotel also adjoins the 1,600-seat live-events theater that is now known as the United Theater on Broadway.
THE DELPHI HOTEL
The Delphi Hotel has opened at the Flower Street site in Downtown that formerly served as the Standard Hotel. The 207-room property, which was originally built in 1955 and served as the headquarters of Superior Oil prior to its conversion to the Standard, houses the Delphi Lounge & Coffee/Tea Bar, which features La Colombe coffee and tea, and will include an all-day diner and a food-truck-inspired rooftop area.
HOTEL PER LA
Hotel Per La has opened at the former site of the NoMad Hotel in Downtown LA. The 241-room hotel features the Italian restaurant Per L'Ora and Mediterranean restaurant Bar Clara among its food and beverage offerings. Built in 1922 and previously serving as the Bank of Italy headquarters, the building also has a rooftop pool deck, while the hotel includes a 4,000-piece art collection.
CONRAD LOS ANGELES
Hilton’s Conrad luxury brand has made its California debut with the opening of the Conrad Los Angeles. The 305-room hotel is part of The Grand LA mixed use project, which is being designed by architect Frank Gehry and is across the street from Walt Disney Concert Hall. The hotel features a 16,000-square-foot rooftop terrace and pool deck; and 12,000 square feet of meeting space. The Grand LA also includes 176,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space, including two food-and-beverage concepts from Chef José Andrés, and 400 private residences.
PIERSIDE HOTEL
The former Holiday Inn Santa Monica beach has been reopened as the Pierside Hotel. Owner Sage Hospitality has updated the hotel’s 132 rooms, and has added a surf-rental shop as well as The Surfing Fox restaurant. The hotel is less than a block from the Santa Monica Pier.
THE SANDBOURNE SANTA MONICA
The Sandbourne Santa Monica has opened at the beachfront Santa Monica site that previously housed Le Merigot. The 175-room hotel includes 10,000 square feet of meeting space, a 200-square-foot dog park and the 187-seat California-Mediterranean restaurant Marelle. The hotel, which is part of Marriott International’s Autograph Collection, will add a full-service spa in 2025.
DOWNTOWN L.A. PROPER
Proper Hotels has opened a second Southern California hotel at the downtown Los Angeles site of the former Case Hotel. The 13-story property, which was built in 1924, has 148 rooms as well as a multi-level rooftop pool deck and two restaurants overseen by James Beard Award-winning local chef Suzanne Goin and restaurateur Caroline Styne (Lucques, a.o.c., Tavern).
THE ASTER
The Aster's spacious 95,000 square ft. private members' club is home to 35 residential-style suites. Hotel guests at The Aster uniquely receive access to the club’s member amenities for the length of their stay—including the Sound Studio, Cinema, Salon, Pool, Gym & Wellness Suite, Work Studios & Conference Rooms, three restaurants, five bars, and a brimming calendar of cultural programming.
KODO HOTEL
Located in a century-old, repurposed firehouse originally known as Engine Company 17, at the heart of the LA Arts District, the Kodo Hotel is a Japanese-minimalist-designed nine-room boutique hotel. The hotel is accompanied by a Japanese-American fusion restaurant and café. The name “kodō” means “heartbeat” in Japanese.
VITORRJA
Vitorrja is a hotel, guest house, and event space from the Gjelina Group, whose restaurants include Gjelina and Gjusta Bakery. Located one block from the boardwalk and beach in Venice, the hotel includes 27 rooms and is inspired by the personalized hospitality of independent hotels and the purposeful utility of traditional boarding houses.
BURTON HOUSE BEVERLY HILLS
The Burton House Beverly Hills has opened under Marriott International’s Tribute Portfolio group of hotels. The 186-room property, which includes studios and suites, was named for Beverly Hills founder Burton Edmond Green. The hotel, which was upgraded from what was previously the Residence Inn by Marriott Beverly Hills, also includes the Emerald Lounge Bar & Restaurant, which features California-Mediterranean cuisine.
CAMBRIA HOTEL BURBANK AIRPORT
A new Cambria Hotel opened next to Hollywood Burbank Airport, located across the street from Metrolink's Burbank Airport - North Station. The six-story, 150-room hotel includes 1,131 square feet of meeting space, a fitness center, and outdoor courtyard, a library lounge, a grab-and-go market, and restaurant RhuBAR.
FAIRMONT CENTURY PLAZA
AccorHotels’ Fairmont badge has taken over the landmark Century Plaza hotel in Century City after completing its $2.5 billion redevelopment. The Fairmont Century Plaza features 400 rooms and 63 luxury residences. The project will also have 290 luxury residences in the project’s two new 46-story towers. The development includes a 14,000-square-foot spa and 24,000 square feet of private event space, as well as four food and beverage options.
CitizenM
Amsterdam-based hotel specialist CitizenM has made its West Coast debut. The Downtown site, located at Fourth and Spring Street, features 315 rooms. Guests are surrounded by artwork by internationally renowned artists, both in-room and in shared spaces, such as wallpaper by Friedrich Kunath in the living room, and five pieces from the KRC Collection including a video art installation by The One Minutes.
HOTELS COMING SOON
REGENT SANTA MONICA (September 2024)
The former Loews Santa Monica Beach Hotel just south of Santa Monica Pier will be renovated, updated and reopened under InterContinental Hotels Group’s Regent Hotels & Resorts luxury brand in September 2024. The property’s room count will be reduced to fewer than 200 from 342, while the hotel will also include a spa and a beachfront pool deck.
JORDAN SAN GABRIEL (January 2025)
The former Hyatt Place property in San Gabriel is being redeveloped and rebranded under Hilton’s Curio Collection as the Jordan San Gabriel. The 212-room hotel, which is located across the street from the San Gabriel Square Mall, is slated to open in January 2025.
AMAN BEVERLY HILLS (2027)
Swiss hotelier Aman has announced plans for a luxury hotel to be developed near the intersection of Wilshire and Santa Monica Boulevards. The Aman Beverly Hills will have as many as 42 rooms and 37 Aman-branded luxury condominiums. The hotel, to be located on the old Robinsons-May department store site that’s just west of the Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills and was previously earmarked for a hotel under China’s Wanda brand, will be part of the 17.5-acre One Beverly Hills project.
VENICE PLACE (2027)
Venice’s Abbot Kinney Boulevard will be the site of a mixed-use project that will include 78 boutique hotel rooms and four furnished long-term-stay units. The Venice Place project, located three blocks from the beach, will include the buildings that currently house Felix Trattoria and ATLA restaurant, and will also feature a rootop pool, retail stores and co-working space.
