Stills from Takashi Murakami's "Jellyfish Eyes" and Billie Eilish's animated music video

Come to The Broad for a screening of Takashi Murakami's ventures into film, featuring his feature-length movie, Jellyfish Eyes (2013, 101 minutes) and music video collaboration with Billie Eilish, “you should see me in a crown” (2019, 3:12 minutes).

Blending computer animation with live-action cinematography, Jellyfish Eyes (2013, 101 minutes) is a coming-of-age story set in a post-Fukushima world. Evoking the spirit of 1950s Japanese monster movies, the film explores themes of generational hope, social change, and self-empowerment.

The story follows Masashi, a young boy who moves with his mother to a quiet town in the Japanese countryside after a natural disaster. One day after school, Masashi discovers a flying jellyfish-like creature, whom he names Kurage-bo. He soon learns that his classmates each have magical pets called F.R.I.E.N.D.s, controlled by electronic devices and used to battle one another. Despite their playful appearances, these F.R.I.E.N.D.s are part of a sinister plot that threatens the entire town.

Jellyfish Eyes is the first live-action feature from acclaimed artist and director Takashi Murakami, combining his signature anime-inspired aesthetic with a story of imagination, friendship, and resilience. The film is currently on a U.S. screening tour of leading art institutions and cultural venues.

Before the screening, enjoy the animated music video “you should see me in a crown” (2019, 3:12 minutes), a collaboration between Billie Eilish and Takashi Murakami. Murakami transforms Eilish into an anime character within his signature vibrant, flower-filled style. Their collaboration also includes a Uniqlo UT capsule collection, magazine covers, and merchandise, blending pop culture, fashion, and anime-inspired art.

Screenings are free and first come, first served.
