When a couple with a growing family buys a house on the Westside of Los Angeles, it normally wouldn't make headlines. But when that couple is Beyoncé and Jay-Z, it captures the world's attention. In 2017, the superstars ended months of speculation and bought an $88-million, 30,000 square-foot mansion in the ritzy Bel-Air neighborhood. Longtime residents of Los Angeles, Bey (a native of Houston) and Jay (born in Brooklyn) moved into an ultra modern compound with six buildings totalling 8 bedrooms, 11 bathrooms, four outdoor swimming pools, and a full-sized basketball court.
But the world-famous couple aren't recluses. They're frequently spotted around L.A., often with their adorable kids, daughter Blue Ivy and their twins, Rumi and Sir. Even though you'll probably never buy a mega-mansion, you can still eat, work out and even dress like Beyoncé. Here are some of the Queen's favorite places in Los Angeles.
The third location of Beauty & Essex occupies 10,000 square feet of space at the Dream Hollywood hotel on Cahuenga Boulevard. The menu features Chef Chris Santos’ globally inspired dishes, such as Grilled Cheese and Tomato Soup Dumplings, Tuna Poke Wonton Tacos, Oven Braised Chicken Meatballs, and Tomato Tartare. The indoor-outdoor restaurant features a ground floor courtyard and a patio on the second level. In April 2017, Beauty & Essex hosted a private dinner for Beyoncé, Jay Z, Victor Cruz, DJ Khaled, Kevin Hart, Jerrod Carmichael and Kelly Rowland.
In March 2017, Beyoncé, Jay Z, Blue Ivy and Jay's mom, Gloria Carter dined at Gjelina, one of their favorite restaurants in L.A. Like any visiting dignitary, the Queen arrived in one of three Escalantes, accompanied by security guards. A hotspot for celeb sightings ever since it opened in 2008, Gjelina is always packed with Venice locals - especially at brunch - who tuck into favorites like lemon buckwheat ricotta pancakes, anchovy and burrata toasts, Santa Barbara ridgeback prawns, and the ever-popular mushroom pizza with fontina, truffle tremor goat cheese and thyme.
Never got that housewarming party invite from the Carters? Not to worry, you can still enjoy their luxurious lifestyle at the nearby Hotel Bel-Air. Opened in 1946, the legendary pink paradise is an urban oasis nestled in 12 acres of landscaped gardens. Greet the hotel's famous swans, check into Marilyn Monroe's favorite suite, and dine at the acclaimed Wolfgang Puck at Hotel-Bel Air restaurant.
One of L.A.'s great championship venues, the world-famous Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena has hosted five Super Bowls, gold medal matches for two Summer Olympics, two FIFA World Cup Finals, superstar concerts and the annual Rose Bowl Game for which it’s named. Sports Illustrated has named Rose Bowl Stadium the number one venue in college sports and one of the Top 20 Venues of the 20th Century.
Beyoncé most recently performed in L.A. at the Rose Bowl during the Formation World Tour in May 2016. The GRAMMY Award winner performed songs from her album Lemonade and sang "The Beautiful Ones" as a tribute to Prince, who had died the previous month. The Carters are bringing their OTR II Stadium Tour to the Rose Bowl on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 22-23, 2018.
In August 2017, Bey and Jay had a date night without the kids at one of their favorite sushi spots, Sushi Park in West Hollywood. Located on the second floor of a strip mall off the famed Sunset Strip, Sushi Park takes its sushi seriously, as posted in a sign: “NO TAKE OUT! No Salad! No Teriyaki, Tempura! No Trendy Sushi! No California Roll! No Spicy Tuna Roll! We serve only Traditional Sushi!" The omakase experience, which spans 17 courses and more than 30 different cuts of high end sushi, costs about $200 per person. It's a small price to pay if you're dining next to music royalty.
Dressing a global superstar like Beyoncé can instantly catapult a fashion designer to fame, and that was the case with Walter Mendez, who was raised in Manhattan Beach and owns a boutique in Downtown L.A. "To have a red-carpet brand in the nucleus of all red carpets is essential to me," Mendez told The Hollywood Reporter. Beyoncé wore Mendez's stunning emerald green gown to Jay Z's third annual Tidal X charity concert in October 2017. It was the Queen's first red carpet appearance since she gave birth to her twins, and by amazing coincidence it was also Mendez's birthday. The Walter Mendez Store is open by appointment only Monday-Saturday.
After being closed for four years, the beloved Mid-City roller rink, World On Wheels reopened in the summer of 2017. The modernized WOW, featuring a refurbished floor, private lounges and VR games, is a collaboration between nightclub manager Tommy Karas and rapper Nipsey Hussle. Beyoncé, Jay Z and a group of their friends went skating at WOW on a Friday night in August 2017. According to US magazine, Bey was casually dressed in ripped jeans and a black shirt. An onlooker said Beyoncé was a "great skater" and she even did a couple of splits!
