Get your turntables ready for some brand new vinyl. Saturday, April 13 is Record Store Day, when record labels unleash a slew of titles ranging from reissues to new tunes. This year's RSD offerings include fresh vinyl from a wide variety of artists ranging from Robyn to Louis Armstrong to Anderson .Paak to Tangerine Dream. This year's buzz-y releases, though, are the tiny Crosley Radio RSD3 turntables made to play 3" records, as well as 3" releases from Jack White and The White Stripes.
As usual, RSD releases can be quite limited and stores may have a cap on how many you can buy. Not all Los Angeles shops participate in RSD and some that do offer sales and other draws in addition to this year's new releases. Read on for our guide to local RSD shopping spots.
Located at Sunset and Cahuenga in Hollywood, Amoeba Music (6400 Sunset Blvd., Los Angeles 90028) has a reputation for going all-out on Record Store Day and this year is no different. There's a process for getting your official RSD releases here. Fill out the Record Store Day List beforehand with your picks and follow the directions. The store itself will be open from 10:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. In addition to RSD releases, there will be sales on everything from turntables to posters, plus swag bags while supplies last. Guest DJs will play during the afternoon and Family Industries will be silkscreening t-shirts and bags. Outside, you'll find the Record Store Day Village going from 1 to 4 p.m. with more sales, along with art, snacks and a prize wheel.
In addition to carrying RSD releases, CD Trader (18926 Ventura Blvd., Tarzana 91356) is holding a sale on April 13 and 14 that will include 30% off used vinyl, 20% off used CDs, DVDs and Bluray, plus 10% off new items. Hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday.
For those who want to make Echo Park their first stop on Record Store Day, Cosmic Vinyl (2149 Sunset Blvd., Los Angeles 90026) opens at 8 a.m on April 13. Besides RSD 2019 releases, Cosmic Vinyl will be offering 15% off on used vinyl as well as a t-shirt giveaway.
If you're shopping for RSD 2019 titles at Freakbeat Records (13616 Ventura Blvd., Sherman Oaks 91423), make sure to write down your wishlist on a piece of paper, as staff will be using this to pull your picks. Freakbeat will also be holding a sale with 10% off everything, RSD titles included, that will last through Sunday, April 14.
Gimme Gimme Records
Early birds in Highland Park will want to head to Gimme Gimme Records (5810 N. Figueroa St., Los Angeles 90042). The shop opens at 8 a.m. on Record Store Day and the first 50 people to buy RSD releases will receive Gimme Gimme cork slipmats. In addition to RSD releases, the shop will be adding 500 records to their bins, so give yourself some time to dig - you don't know what you'll find.
Jacknife Records and Tapes
Atwater Village shop Jacknife Records & Tapes (3149 Glendale Blvd, Los Angeles 90039) won't be carrying RSD 2019 releases, but they have a day of live music scheduled for April 13. Check out performances from Sunset Driver, Eamon Fogarty, Dominique, Derek Gaines, Ki Oni, Takako Minekawa and Dustin Wong, Kat & Ben and Philip Rankin. DJs include Chris Kissel, KMAN, Tniz and Newman Wolf.
The Record Parlour
The Record Parlour (6408 Selma Ave., Los Angeles 90028) has a theme for Record Store Day this year, "<3 L.A. DJs." The Hollywood record shop stocked up on the Crosley Mini 3-inch Turntable that will be available on RSD. Since the tiny record player is made to play unusually small pieces of vinyl, you might also be able to get your hands on the Third Man Records 3" releases here too.
From April 13-15, The Record Parlour will also be offering Vinyl Kryptonite, a 2000+ vinyl collection purchased from director Richard Donner (The Omen, Superman, The Goonies, Lethal Weapon). The store has already posted some preview photos on Facebook that include a killer selection of 1960s and '70s rock, as well as film soundtracks.
Record Surplus (12436 Santa Monica Blvd., Los Angeles 90025) is celebrating Record Store Day all weekend. The West L.A. mainstay will be having a sale running from Friday through Sunday, April 12-14, with 20% off all used items, from vinyl to books. Starting at 11 a.m. on April 13, RSD 2019 releases will be available at the store, along with freebies while supplies last.
Long-running Westchester record store Soundations (8701 La Tijera Blvd., Los Angeles 90045) has shoppers in the LAX-area covered this year. The store will open around 9 a.m. on Record Store Day and they are carrying RSD 2019 releases.
