Agar Art on Display: Bridging Science and Art with Microbes

The Path of Discovery agar art piece

The American Society for Microbiology’s Agar Art Contest invites scientists and artists to create stunning works of art using living microbes "painted" onto agar—a gelatin-like substance that serves as food for microorganisms. This viral sci-art phenomenon, which has been featured in National Geographic, Huffington Post, on the TODAY show and CNN, has been showcasing the beauty and versatility of microbes for years. Since 2015, more than 1700 artists spanning the globe have used living microorganisms as their medium of expression to create over 1500 works of art. This special exhibition will showcase winning and standout pieces from our most recent contest, along with select highlights from past years. Stop by this free event to witness these masterpieces up close, enjoy light bites, and earn a complementary drink ticket with entry!
