About the Film:
When an exclusive clique of teenage socialites accidentally murders their best friend Liz (Charlotte Ayanna), the three girls responsible—Courtney (Rose McGowan), Julie (Rebecca Gayheart), and Marcie (Julie Benz)—conspire to cover it up. But when nerdy outcast Fern Mayo (Judy Greer) gets pulled into the scheme, the halls of Reagan High are flipped upside down. Featuring a powerhouse cast and wicked wit, Jawbreaker is a twisted take on high school royalty, deception, and revenge.
Behind the Film:
From the moment Jawbreaker hit the big screen in 1999, Darren Stein secured his place as a defining voice in cult cinema. His candy-colored, razor-sharp dark comedy turned the high school drama on its head, introducing audiences to the unforgettable world of Courtney Shayne and her killer posse. But before he redefined the genre, Stein was just a Valley kid growing up in LA—his love for cinema shaped by neon malls, legendary theaters, and real-life Valley Girls who inspired his characters.
In his exclusive guest article for the LA Explained blog, Memoirs of a Movie-Loving Valley Boy, Darren traces the hometown roots and coming-of-age moments that shaped Jawbreaker’s signature style.
