The Compton Film Festival (OPENING DAY)

Get ready—The Compton Film Festival is back and bigger than ever! Taking place September 4–7,
2025 at Compton College, this four-day cultural event is a celebration of storytelling, creative
expression, and community connection through the power of film.
Focused on short-form cinema, the festival is a launchpad for emerging talent and an opportunity to
witness powerful stories that inspire, challenge, and entertain.
We’re also proud to announce that Young Movie Makers of America will be participating in this
year’s festival. Their involvement highlights our shared commitment to nurturing young creatives and
uplifting the next generation of diverse filmmakers.
Hometown Spotlight: Van Elder
We’re proud to spotlight Van Elder—writer, director, and producer, and a native of Compton—whose
impressive career spans six feature films, four award-winning shorts, and series across major networks
including BET, Showtime, Starz, NBC, and Amazon Prime.
Elder’s latest film “I Left My Heart in Colombia” (2024) adds to a legacy of compelling storytelling,
following acclaimed works like Perfectly Single, DWB: Dating While Black, and Kings of L.A.
Opening Night: Cooley High + Red Carpet
Kick off the festival with a special red-carpet screening of the classic coming-of-age film Cooley High,
followed by an exclusive Q&A with director Michael Shultz and actor Garret Morrison.
Red Carpet: 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM Q&A + Screening: Begins at 7:00 PM
This is a rare chance to hear directly from the creative minds behind this beloved classic.
