One of the pillars of music and culture around the world, jazz is America's indigenous art form - born in the United States and eventually spanning the globe in its impact and influence. Declared "a rare and valuable national American treasure" by Congress in 1987, jazz has been an integral part of the Los Angeles experience for decades, from historic Central Avenue to the Hollywood Bowl Jazz Festival and La La Land. Read on for the best jazz clubs and weekly music nights in Los Angeles.

Rhythm Room
A true LA resurrection story, the Rhythm Room was originally a jazz lounge in the basement of the Hotel Hayward and a hotbed of entertainment in the 1940s and '50s. The lounge closed when the hotel - along with the Financial District - fell into disrepair in the 1970s. Reopened in 2017, Rhythm Room is one of Downtown LA's top underground bars and provides a change of pace from the area’s hushed cocktail temples and booming dance clubs. Much of the original architecture remains intact, notably the marble staircase that leads guests down from street level to a cozy World War II-style bar with retro furnishings. Live jazz plays as it did in the original space, and there are plenty of games throughout the space - darts, billiards, ping pong and shuffleboard; plus board games that line the walls.

“Los Angeles has always been a second home to me, and I can’t wait to bring LA culture to the Blue Note.” ~ Robert Glasper

Blue Note Jazz Club
In August 2025, the Blue Note Jazz Club opened in the former Stella Barra space at the corner of Sunset Boulevard and Ivar Avenue. Founded by Danny Bensusan, the legendary Greenwich Village club has expanded to locations in Beijing and Shanghai, Milan, Napa, Rio and São Paulo, Tokyo and Waikiki. Featuring a Mid-Century design by the acclaimed Legeard Studio, Blue Note LA is the first location with two rooms - a 200-person capacity main room for headliners; and a 100-person "B-side" for developing artists and surprise jams.

Bensusan's son Steven, President of Blue Note Entertainment Group, told the LA Times that with the B-side the Blue Note "[will] be able to experiment with and book younger artists that maybe can’t draw in the bigger room and then help develop them so that they can, and giving them the exposure within our marketing and our advertising efforts and help give them more gigs." Steven added, “We want to create the mecca for jazz in LA.”

Five-time GRAMMY Award winner and Blue Note fave Robert Glasper christened the Blue Note on August 14 and 15. Alex Kurland, Blue Note's director of programming and talent buyer, told the LA Times: “We were not going to open the club without Glasper being the opening talent. We have a very deep relationship and alignment with him, and he wanted to open it.”

Along with Glasper, in its opening weeks the Blue Note hosted luminaries like Mayer Hawthorne, Ravi Coltrane and Esperanza Spalding. Upcoming performances include Killer Mike, The Soul Rebels with Too Short, Charlie Puth, Branford Marsalis Quartet, Tank and the Bangas, Ben Folds and the Charles Lloyd Quartet.

LA native and UCLA alumnus Kamasi Washington will play a 12-night stand at the Blue Note: September 30 - October 5 and October 7-12. Washington's acclaimed albums include The Epic, Heaven and Earth, Fearless Movement and the score for the Michelle Obama documentary Becoming. Washington has toured, collaborated and shared stages with Chaka Khan, Florence + the Machine, Flying Lotus, Kendrick Lamar, Mike Muir, Raphael Saadiq, Run the Jewels, St. Vincent and Herbie Hancock, with whom he curated the Blue Note Jazz Festival at the Hollywood Bowl for the second consecutive year.
