You’re a jet-setting, bicoastal sophisticate with a haute-cool aesthetic who is, was, or has recently dated a supermodel. Vogue Italia, Vanity Fair, and Conde Nast Traveler are your favorite books, and the phrase “highly Instagrammable” was inspired directly by your opulently-textured life (as was Saint Laurent’s most recent collection.)
You’ll always be a New Yorker at heart, but frankly the renaissance of Downtown L.A. intrigues you, so you decide to treat yourself to some West Coast luxe with an extended stay at the NoMad Los Angeles, sibling of the acclaimed NoMad in New York, where you’ve staycationed many a time and enjoyed the cuisine of chef Daniel Humm, owner of three Michelin stars and the #1 spot on The World's 50 Best Restaurants list. When you heard Humm was bringing his magic to the NoMad’s new West Coast flagship, you immediately decided to book a very important meeting in L.A.
You wake up in one of the hotel’s lavishly appointed 241 rooms—yours happens to be the ultra-luxurious RWB Suite, a spacious 1,250 square-foot pied-a-terre with its own library, dining room, pantry and freestanding pedestal bathtub (a feature of many rooms). Its sweeping views of Downtown L.A. beckon you outside, so you put on your Warby Parkers, some Gucci loafers and take yourself downstairs.
You stroll through the lobby with its floral rugs, dark wood, velvets and beautifully restored gold and blue Italianate ceiling, whose hues inspired the design of the property’s rooms. You enjoy how designer Jacques Garcia (interior decorator for the Sultan of Brunei and many hotels in Paris) has mixed 17th- and 18th-century references with modern influences within the iconic building. Le sigh.
A quick morning cappuccino and breakfast under that lobby ceiling, where the waiter tells you that this building used to be The Bank of Italy, where Walt Disney took out a loan to finance Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. In fact, this is the historic Giannini Place building, completed in 1922 by the same architects behind the iconic Mayan and Belasco theatres in Downtown L.A. You’re falling in love with this town and its groovy history more and more.
Your assistant already made you dinner reservations for tonight at Humm’s Mezzanine restaurant at the NoMad, which gives you approximately eight hours to explore the wonders of Downtown L.A.
Located in the heart of the financial district, the hotel is strolling distance from the world class modern art at The Broad, the delectable patisserie at Bottega Louie, the rooftop bar at Perch, the LA Philharmonic at Walt Disney Concert Hall and thank God, a Whole Foods — because you forgot to pack your ridiculously expensive sulphate-free shampoo. You get your retail fix at the 3.1 Phillip Lim concept store in the Arts District, and at Please Do Not Enter, which relocated here from France.
You return to NoMad famished, ready to explore the dinner menu at the formal, elegant Mezzanine, which takes reservations a month or so in advance. You order pan-roasted duck with apples and chicories, although you’re delighted to see some of your favorite items from NoMad in NYC - like its famed roast chicken with black truffle and brioche stuffing.
After a nightcap at the Giannini Bar, you stop by the gorgeous rooftop pool, which is dominated by an Italian stone sculpture. This Downtown skyline reminds you of Gotham, except it’s 70 degrees at night in January and everyone looks remarkably relaxed.
You return to your suite, and lower yourself into a hot bath in your pedestal bathtub. Perhaps you should extend your extended stay. Perhaps you should fly out your supermodel ex-lover - their stunning good looks would fit right in.
