Opened simultaneously with the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures itself on September 30, the Academy Museum Store is the place to find exclusive and sometimes literally unique gifts for the serious cinephiles in your life. (And, yes, that can include “gifts to self”!)

Don’t expect the typical, tired branded mugs and shirts of an everyday gift shop. Instead, this meticulously thought-out 2,600-square-foot space features imaginative merchandise designed and produced exclusively for the Academy Museum Store, including Oscars® memorabilia and other film-related treasures. And we’re talking about an enormous and eclectic array: clothing, furniture, accessories, vinyl records, items for the office and home, posters, maps, illustrations, toys, games, and other movie-related collectibles. Not to mention the most comprehensive collection of cinema books and catalogues in Los Angeles.

“The Academy Museum is committed to showcasing the diverse and inclusive stories of the art and artists of moviemaking, and this ethos extends to our Academy Museum Store,” said Bill Kramer, Director and President of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, in a press release.

Furthermore, the Academy Museum is working with super-talented members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to design exceptional, one-of-a-kind items for the store. The museum has also placed considerable focus on partnerships with Los Angeles- and California-based artists, designers, and creatives to produce merchandise specifically for the store.

“These collaborations, along with our unparalleled selection of books and catalogues on cinema, will offer to visitors a retail experience unlike any other,” Kramer continued.

Here are some Academy Museum Store gift ideas that will surprise and delight even the most dedicated movie buffs.

“The Wizard of Oz” Exclusives

Costume designer Arianne Phillips, a triple Academy Award® nominee for her work on James Mangold’s Walk the Line, Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and Madonna’s W.E. is serving as the creative director of a limited-edition clothing collection inspired by The Wizard of Oz. Phillips is working with fellow Academy Members and costume designers Arjun Bhasin (Life of Pi, Monsoon Wedding) and Sandy Powell (Shakespeare in Love, The Aviator) on designing t-shirts inspired by the iconic and groundbreaking 1939 musical fantasy.

Phillips has also teamed with celebrity fashion designer Jeremy Scott – known for outfitting the likes of Beyoncé, Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, and CL – to design a bespoke capsule collection of clothing and accessories, also based on The Wizard of Oz, that will be produced by Italian luxury fashion house Moschino. All these Wizard of Oz pieces will be sold exclusively at the Academy Museum Store.

Academy Member Collabs

Amplifying the Academy Museum’s partnerships with its expert members on exhibitions, screenings, and public and education programs, the Academy Museum Store is also working with these leading artists and professionals to create exclusive items for sale.

Academy Award®-winning costume designer Ruth E. Carter worked with jewelry designer Douriean Fletcher on the 2016 remake of the Roots miniseries and the 2018 blockbuster Black Panther. Now the two have teamed up again to create a jewelry line developed from the original gold-glass mosaic tiles from the Academy Museum’s iconic exterior gold cylinder (thousands of which were replaced during the building’s restoration).

Additionally, production and conceptual designer I. Javier Ameijeiras is designing a series of illustrations for use on Academy Museum merchandise, and Gravillis - the graphic design agency behind striking posters for Straight Outta Compton, Bohemian Rhapsody, and BlacKkKlansmen – is creating a series of exclusive film posters. And Spike Lee and his 40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks are presenting a line of items designed in conjunction with the Director’s Inspiration gallery in the Academy Museum’s Stories of Cinema core exhibition.
