Opened in January 2014, the Ace Hotel Downtown Los Angeles features 180 rooms, the rooftop Upstairs at Ace, and a stunning 1,600-seat theatre. The hotel was built as the United Artists Building in 1927, designed by architect C. Howard Crane in a Spanish Gothic style and modeled after the Segovia Cathedral in Spain. The United Artists Theatre was the flagship movie theatre for United Artists, the film studio founded by Charlie Chaplin, Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks and D.W. Griffith. The hotel’s rooftop quickly became a popular Instagram location, from shots of the signature tower to the nearby Eastern Columbia building. Another Instagram hit is a portrait of Michael Jackson, one of many “hieroglyphics” created by the Haas Brothers that are located throughout the lobby and mezzanine.
