LAの美術館でアジアのアートとアジアン・アメリカンの歴史を学ぼう！（前編）

古代アートから現代アートまで、LAの美術館にはアジアとアジアンアメリカンの歴史に付随した、世界トップレベルの作品が数多く展示されています。今回は、コレクションを見ながら歴史について学ぶことのできる、おすすめの美術館をピックアップしました。

For more than half a century, cinephiles have gathered over Labor Day Weekend to celebrate the movies at the annual Cinecon Classic Film Festival. Taking place Sept. 1-5, Cinecon 52 welcomes archivists, authors, collectors and film fans to enjoy five days of classic film screenings, special programs, celebrity guests, and the famed movie memorabilia show. Cinecon is dedicated to showcasing unusual films that are rarely given public screenings.

Highlights include the new restoration of King of Jazz, a lavish 1930 musical with Paul Whiteman and his orchestra headlining an all-star cast; That's That, an unreleased Laurel & Hardy gag reel; So This is Paris, a classic French-style bedroom farce directed by the great Ernst Lubitsch; and a new restoration of the Marx Brothers classic Animal Crackers - a British version with footage that was cut by American censors. All screenings are taking place at the historic Egyptian Theater on Hollywood Boulevard.

Loews Hollywood Hotel
The host hotel for Cinecon 52 is the Loews Hollywood Hotel, located on Highland Avenue just a five-minute walk from the Egyptian. Cinecon's famous Memorabilia Show, one of the best movie memorabilia markets in the country, will take place at the hotel's mezzanine level along with book signings and the registration table. Dealers from across the country and around the world will sell original items that span the history of film, from silent era classics through today's hottest blockbusters.

The Loews is offering attendees a special room rate of $229 per night - be sure to mention Cinecon when booking your room to receive the discount. The special rate is good for up to three days before and three days after Cinecon (based on availability).

ダウンタウンのLittle TokyoにあるJapanese American National Museum(JANM)は、アメリカにおいての幅広い異文化の歴史を紹介しつつ、ジャパニーズアメリカンとよばれる日系アメリカ人達の歩んできた歴史とその軌跡を詳しく展示している美術館です。ちなみに、アート（芸術作品）や歴史的文化財を通して日系アメリカ人の歴史を展示する美術館としては、アメリカ最大といわれています。現在開催中の展示会、「Common Ground: The Heart of Community.」では、130年にわたる日系アメリカ人の歴史を、詳しく学ぶことができます。日系アメリカ人一世から始まり、第二次世界大戦をどのようにいき伸び現在にまで至ったのか、とても興味深い歴史が綴られています。

Chinese American Museum（CAM）はアメリカにおいての異文化の歴史を比較しつつ、中国系アメリカ人の培った経験や歴史にスポットを当て、詳しく紹介する、南カルフォルニアで最初の美術館です。LAで最初にチャイナタウンができたといわれる場所にあるCAMは、建物自体が歴史を語っている様にもみえます。美術館では、ロサンゼルスという土地で、中国系アメリカ人たちがどのようにして現在まで歴史を築き上げてきたのか、その功績と受け継がれている伝統にスポットをあて、より深く学べる内容になっています。進行中の展示会「Origins: The Birth and Rise of Chinese American Communities in Los Angeles」では、現在のダウンタウンからSan Gabriel Valleyにかけての中国系アメリカ人のエリアは、どのようにして広がり、繁栄していったのか、詳しく展示しています。観光客のみならずローカルからも愛される、由緒ある美術館に、ぜひ一度足を運んでみてください。

全米で最も大きいコリアンコミュニティーの一つといわれる、LAコリアタウンの中心にあるKorean American Museumは、韓国系アメリカ人の歴史、文化、功績を展示し、学ぶ場所として建てられました。こじんまりとした建物ではありますが、韓国に関するものにおいての情報量は、アメリカ一ともいわれるほどです。美術館では、韓国系アメリカ人のビジネスの歴史に付随するものから、宗教的な分野のもの、芸術品、歴史的文化財まで、幅広く展示されています。韓国、また韓国人がロサンゼルスに与えたインパクトと、その逆で、ロサンゼルスが韓国人たちに与えられたインパクトにフォーカスを当て、コリアンタウンの歴史と、そのコミュニティーのありかたについてを詳しく紹介しています。
