In 1974, Asleep at the Wheel relocated from the Bay Area to Austin, Texas, encouraged
by Willie Nelson and Doug Sahm, and has called it home ever since. Led by founding
member Ray Benson, the band has spent five decades building a global reputation as
torchbearers of Texas and Western Swing music.
Known for its ever-evolving lineup—with over 100 members passing through since
1970—the group continues to refresh its sound. Their latest album, Riding High In Texas
(2025), marks their 32nd release and first since 2021, introducing new members
including fiddler and vocalist Ian Stewart alongside Benson.
The album serves as both a tribute to Texas and a showcase of the band’s current era,
blending classic and lesser-known songs tied to the state. Featuring guest appearances
from artists like Billy Strings and longtime collaborator Lyle Lovett, the project reflects
Asleep at the Wheel’s deep roots, enduring legacy, and ongoing evolution.
