FREE Embroidery Workshop: Mourning Global Warming
Sunday, April 28, 2-4PM
In conjunction with our ‘2 DEGREES‘ group exhibition on climate change, featured
artist, Sarita Zaleha, has volunteered to lead a free embroidery workshop here at Avenue 50 Studio!
You are invited to stitch storm names as part of Mourning Global Warming, an ongoing traveling project by Sarita Zaleha. Participants embroider names of hurricanes and typhoons, and this collective labor becomes visible through variations in each participant’s stitching. The crafting practices of quilting and embroidering are inflected with traditions of mourning, though we usually associate grieving and mourning with the loss of individuals and human death. With this project, these mourning practices attend to the ecological damages that have occurred and continue to occur, bringing our focused attention to this loss. Once embroideries are complete, they are sewn into patchwork flags (on view in the 2 Degrees exhibition at Avenue 50 Studio) and used at climate change events and demonstrations.
More information on this project is at mourningglobalwarming.com.
All ages and skill levels welcome
No embroidery experience required
Free parking is available parallel to the train tracks, or consider our environment & take the Gold Line! We are located walking distance from the Highland Park Metro Gold Line Station.
About '2 Degrees,' a group exhibition on the dangers of climate change:
Climate experts around the world are warning us about the danger of our Earth’s temperature climbing higher each year. Two degrees Celsius is the number they’ve given us as the point of no return. Scientists expect in a post-2-degree world we would experience an increase in extreme weather; animals and plants will be at a higher risk of extinction; the Arctic will keep melting; crop yields will decrease; and freshwater will decline. Yet, roughly 40% of the population doesn’t believe in climate change, with many of those believing it’s a hoax.
