You’re an Anglophile with an eye for modern design. That’s precisely why you’ve chosen to stay at The Hoxton Downtown LA, the stunning new hotel now open on Broadway. But The Hoxton isn’t just any hotel. For starters, it is housed in the former Los Angeles Railway building which originally opened in 1922. In the nearly 100 years since, the historic building has also been home to a grocery store, a restaurant, a candy store and a garment manufacturer.

More recently, the London-based Hoxton brand has been painstakingly renovating the historic building to create an open-house hotel inspired by the diversity and originality of the streets and scenes surrounding it. The end result? As soon as you arrive, you confirm it is utterly on point.

The 10-story Beaux Arts building is in the heart of the revived neon-soaked Broadway Theatre District, which includes 12 movie theatres built between 1910 and 1931. It also places you just a short walk from the Fashion District, L.A. LIVE, and STAPLES Center, and gives you plenty of access to all of the architectural, and cultural landmarks in Downtown LA’s Historic Core. But its location is just the first of many reasons the Hoxton is trending.

Inside The Hoxton, the brand’s in-house design studio at Ennismore collaborated with SoHo House to design a picture-perfect ground floor lobby. With Art Deco elements thoughtfully peppered throughout, floral motifs, bold colors, eye-catching artwork, and geometric patterns are juxtaposed with delicate touches of French influence. It’s undeniably chic, and you’re instantly a bit obsessed.

The Hoxton’s concierge is as welcoming as the ambiance, when directing you to your room. He reminds you that Wi-Fi is fast and free throughout the building, and you’re welcome to make daily calls anywhere in the world free of charge. In the morning you’ll also have a light breakfast bag delivered to your room.

Of the four room options at The Hoxton (Snug, Cosy, Roomy, and Biggy), you’ve booked a Biggy, as you’ve come to LA with a friend, and your pup, since The Hoxton is dog-friendly. Upon entering your Biggy room you’re delighted to see that it is plenty big for the three of you.

It’s flooded with LA's world-famous sunshine, making the noticeably chic décor almost shimmer, while also offering wonderful city views. Much like in The Hoxton’s lobby, bold patterns, including chevron flooring, wall paneling, and House of Hackney textiles project a totally haute vibe. There’s also plenty of space to hang your belongings in the large wardrobe.

In your bathroom, marble surfaces, zellige-tile, and a large walk-in shower showcase the design team’s talent for retaining the charm of the vintage building, all the while making it feel perfectly contemporary.

Boasting sweeping views of the city and plenty of luxurious seating and lounging options, Pilot - The Hoxton’s Mediterranean inspired restaurant, bar and lounge - is sure to be a hit when it opens. For now, you’ll test the new tropics-inspired drink menu at the poolside bar - your icy concoction is served in a covert-Tiki pink flamingo mug. Mental note: live-fire cooking is all the rage, and you’re dying to experience it here, set against the backdrop of Downtown LA's skyscrapers.

But in the meantime, a snack is in order and you’re in luck. Adjacent to the lobby is The Hoxton’s all-day diner, Sibling Rival. Helmed by the team behind New York’s beloved Sunday in Brooklyn - one of the busiest restaurants in Williamsburg - Sibling Rival offers up a modern take on diner-fare. Culinary offerings at both Sibling Rival and Pilot are under the careful eye of Executive Chef John Taube, previously at The NoMad in DTLA.

You’re fueled and ready to head out for an afternoon of exploring. After strolling along Broadway, snapping pics of the theatres, you head to the Fashion District to see what to expect next season, before heading back to the Hoxton to prepare for dinner.

When Pilot opens in the fall of 2019 it will be exceptional, rivaled only by LA's skyline at night. As you and your friend discuss your plans for tomorrow, you remind her that it’s not a question of what you should see while in Downtown LA, but rather what you cannot afford to miss, if you want to retain your tastemaker cred.

You’ll start your day exploring the world-class contemporary art collection at The Broad - you wisely made reservations months ago - before heading to the museum at the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising (FIDM). Beyond that, there are visits to hidden gems in Downtown LA neighborhoods ranging from Chinatown to Little Tokyo, and everywhere in between.

After finishing your Sun Chaser cocktail at Sibling Rival, you retire to your room. As you start to nod off, you can't imagine how you’ll describe the vintage-meets-vogue vibe of The Hoxton to your friends back home. You immediately drift to sleep, dreaming of lemon curd pie, fire and flamingos.
