World Travel Market - London
L.A. Tourism’s Europe office exhibited at World Travel Market (WTM), a leading global event for the travel industry, in London Nov. 6 – 8, 2017. Staff met with key European and Middle Eastern tour operators and airlines to provide the latest destination news and updates. In partnership with Visit California, the team co-hosted a VIP Client event for 135 airline, trade and media representatives from the U.K. and Ireland. WTM attracted 51,000 travel professionals across the three-day show.
Aer Lingus & Visit USA Travel Agent Appreciation Event - Dublin
In an effort to promote Los Angeles, L.A. Tourism’s Europe office sponsored the Aer Lingus & Visit USA Travel Agent Appreciation Event held in Dublin, Ireland on Nov. 23, 2017. Travel agents received an informative Los Angeles presentation highlighting direct air service from Ireland, enjoyed live music with American food & drink.
Visit CA California Advisory Board – China FAM
In partnership with Visit California, L.A. Tourism hosted a group of 11 client advisory board members with top travel companies from Shanghai and Guangzhou and United Airlines staff Nov. 3-5, 2017. Their educational itinerary showcased only-in-L.A. experiences including Petersen Automotive Museum, a Clippers game at STAPLES Center, Triple 8 China Bar & Grill, and more. A networking breakfast showcased L.A. Tourism members such as Visit West Hollywood, Getty Center, Petersen Museum and Wilshire Limo Service. Accommodations were provided by InterContinental Los Angeles Century City.
Travel News Market – Stockholm
L.A. Tourism’s Scandinavia representative Johnny Gardsäter and reps from Norwegian Airlines met with 1,200 travel professionals at Travel News Market in Stockholm on Nov. 9, 2017. Los Angeles hosted a table with pop-ups in the Discover America area to educate travel pros about the destination while supporting Norwegian and SAS Airlines direct air services to LAX.
Mode Tour Trade Show – South Korea
In partnership with Visit California, L.A. Tourism participated in Mode Tour Travel Mart, the largest travel convention in South Korea, Nov. 16-19, 2017. Representative Yae Hwon Kim briefed travel professionals and consumers about the latest L.A. happenings throughout the show while distributing Korean-language pocket guides, maps, and other collateral. A record 73,800 attendees experienced the show with 320 travel trade partners.
Club California – Osaka
In partnership with Visit California, L.A. Tourism exhibited at Club California, Japan’s annual travel trade event, in Osaka on Nov. 24, 2017. Representative Emiko Morimoto showcased the latest L.A. news and updates including LAX Airport, Angels Flight, ROW DTLA, Westfield Century City as well as new hotels and attractions. A total 60 travel trade and media attended the trade event.
WB Justice League Training Seminars – Australia
L.A. Tourism’s Australia office partnered with Warner Bros. Studio Tour Hollywood and Air New Zealand for a series of VIP screenings of the new “Justice League” movie in Sydney, Melbourne and the Gold Coast from Nov. 16-22, 2017. Travel Trade Manager Carolyn Nightingale shared the latest destination updates on L.A.’s newest hotels, attractions and LAX Airport to more than 150 Australian retail travel agents. A trip to L.A. was used as an incentive at the seminars including prizes from Loews Hollywood Hotel, Air New Zealand and Warner Bros Studio Tour Hollywood.
Qantas - American Music Awards FAM
As part of a national trade sales incentive with leading travel retailer Flight Center Australia, L.A. Tourism and Qantas Airways rewarded ten top-selling travel agents with a four-day FAM trip to Los Angeles to attend the 2017 American Music Awards. The educational FAM showcased the best of L.A. with an itinerary highlighting Universal Studios Hollywood, a tour of Hollywood with L.A. Urban Adventures, Warner Bros. Studio Tour Hollywood, shopping at Westfield Century City and more. The group experienced the American Music Awards at Microsoft Theatre at L.A. LIVE before concluding the trip with rooftop cocktails at Hotel Erwin in Venice Beach. Accommodations were provided by Hollywood Roosevelt.
Helloworld FrontLiners Conference
L.A. Tourism partnered with eight DMOs from within California and United Airlines to exhibit at the annual Helloworld Travel FrontLiners Conference in Hobart, Australia November 23-25, 2017. This year’s theme for the California suppliers was “California: The Ultimate Road Trip” as self-drive vacations are one of the most popular ways for Australians to explore the state’s destinations. Staff conducted training seminars for travel agents detailing the best self-drive trips within L.A. as well as shared the latest updates on new hotels and LAX Airport. The three-day trade event attracts over 500 frontline travel agents from Helloworld Travel, the number two retail travel agency brand in Australia.
Abu Dhabi Travel Trade Event
L.A. Tourism representatives exhibited at the second annual Abu Dhabi Travel Event (ADTTE), the trade event for USA travel partners, at the Bab Al Qasr Hotel in Abu Dhabi on November 16, 2017. Reps showcased the destination and its offerings to more than 30 travel agents from Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and Sharjah.
L.A. Tourism in France
L.A. Tourism’s France office conduced several training seminars for hundreds of trade professionals throughout November showcasing the latest destination news and product updates. Training events were held at Voyamar headquarters in Lyon, First USA network in Marseilles, as well as the Event Visit USA Committee in both cities. Staff also conducted training at Club California with Air Tahiti Nui and Visit USA Committee – Paris, where Los Angeles was recognized as the city of honor.
L.A. Tourism in China
Los Angeles City Delegation to China
A delegation of City of Los Angeles and tourism officials, led by Deputy Mayor Jeff Gorell and L.A. Tourism President & CEO Ernest Wooden Jr., traveled to China to celebrate the direct air service launch between Beijing and LAX via American Airlines as well as participate in the Guangzhou-Auckland-Los Angeles Tripartite Economic Summit from November 5 – 10, 2017. During the mission, L.A. Tourism staff participated in the AA Inaugural New Service Gate Event at T2 of Beijing Capital International Airport on to celebrate the daily non-stop direct air service between Beijing and LAX. Mr. Gorell and Mr. Wooden delivered welcome speeches at the AA Inaugural New Service Customer Event, which was attended by 250 representatives from Beijing’s travel trade, government, airlines and travel media.
L.A. Tourism officials also met with Mioji, a travel technology company providing A.I.-powered itinerary planning platform, and signed an agreement making L.A. Tourism the first DMO to work with this high-travel-tech company. Information of L.A. Tourism members such as hotels, airport, transportation, shopping centers and theme parks have been uploaded into the system, which can be used by travel agents to tailor-make in-depth L.A. products and packages within 10 seconds.
Officials then flew to Guangzhou to join the Guangzhou-Auckland-Los Angeles Tripartite Economic Summit Nov. 8-10, 2017. Guangzhou and Auckland are two of L.A.’s most well-established and economically important sister cities. The 1st Tripartite Summit took place in 2015 in Los Angeles, 2016 in Auckland, and 2017 in Guangzhou. The City of Los Angeles hosted a Discover Los Angeles Luncheon, which was attended by 260 officials from Guangzhou Municipal Government, Auckland Council, the Consulate General of the U.S. Guangzhou, L.A. City Delegation as well as travel trade partners and media from South China. During the Tripartite Economic Summit, Mr. Wooden signed a MOU with representatives from Auckland Tourism Events and Economic Development, and Tourism Administration of Guangzhou Municipality. Tourism officials also met with China Southern Airlines and Hong Kong Airlines, two airlines that offer direct air service to LAX.
American Airlines FAM
To promote American Airlines new direct air service from Beijing to LAX, L.A. Tourism hosted a group of travel trade professionals on a visit to Los Angeles from Nov. 8-11, 2017. Their educational itinerary showcased ‘only-in-L.A.’ experiences such as Private Suite at LAX, Porsche Experience Center, Angels Flight, OUE Skyspace LA, Warner Bros. Studio Tour Hollywood, USS IOWA, Griffith Observatory and more.
Organized by Visit California, L.A. Tourism’s Beijing office participated in its Club California event on November 10, 2017. Staff shared the latest destination updates with 10 top travel agents from Beijing with information on direct air service, Private Suite at LAX, Angles Flight, OUE Skyspace LA, Universal Studios Hollywood and new hotels such as InterContinental Los Angeles Downtown and Hotel Indigo Los Angeles Downtown.
In-house Trainings in Zhejiang
L.A. Tourism’s Shanghai office conducted in-house trainings in Zhejiang Province (Wenzhou, Shaoxing & Ningbo) from Nov. 13 - 16, 2017 as organized by US Consulate General Shanghai. Staff shared L.A. presentations with 220 travel professionals from six travel operators from Wenzhou, Shaoxing and Ningbo of Zhejiang Province. The latest information on LAX Airport, attractions, hotels, dining and shopping was included in the training seminars.
Delta Promotion – Shanghai
In partnership with Delta Airlines, L.A. Tourism’s Shanghai office promoted L.A. tour packages to 70 ticketing agents to drive sales during the low season. These packages included products from members including Starline Tours, Universal Studios Hollywood, TMD hotels, receptive tour operators and shopping.
L.A. Tourism’s Chengdu office exhibited at CITM 2017 in Kunming from Nov. 17-19, 2017. Staff held meetings with 120 travel professionals from 54 travel agencies, wholesalers, airlines from China during the trade show. The latest L.A. updates were shared with the agents including direct air service info, Private Suite at LAX, new attractions and hotels.
Beijing Shougang International Travel
L.A. Tourism’s Beijing office conducted an in-house training at Beijing Shougang International Travel on Nov. 22, 2017. Staff shared information on direct air service highlighting the new PEK to LAX and HKG to LAX routes, unique L.A. attractions, new hotels and Private Suite at LAX with ten agents. Established in 1992, Beijing Shougang International Travel specializes in business travel, tailor-made tours and MICE groups. In 2017, over 3000 clients booked their L.A. related products through Beijing Shougang International Travel.
Pyramid Hotel Group VIP Luncheon
L.A. Tourism’s Beijing and Shanghai offices assisted the Pyramid Hotel Group, which manages L.A. Tourism member Sheraton Los Angeles San Gabriel, to organize a high-end client luncheon in Beijing & Shanghai from Nov. 27-28, 2017, respectively. A total 24 VIPs from key MICE, OTA and top travel agencies from Beijing and Shanghai attended the luncheon where details of the new 288-room hotel (opening January 2018) were shared.
L.A. Angels Salon Beijing
In partnership with Universal Studios Hollywood, an L.A. Angels Salon was organized in Beijing on November 28, 2017. Staff shared the latest information on direct air service to LAX, Private Suite at LAX, OUE Skyspace LA, and hew hotels with 10 representatives from high-end and tailor-made tour planners, OTAs and traditional tour operators.
BUSA Roadshows and In-house Trainings
L.A. Tourism’s Shanghai office joined BUSA roadshows and in-house trainings in Nanjing and Hangzhou from Nov. 27-Dec. 1, 2017. Staff shared destination presentations highlighting LAX Airport, Private Suite at LAX, cultural attractions, shopping and dineL.A. to 265 trade professionals.
L.A. Tourism’s Communications team hosted a global group of media hailing from the U.K., Australia, New Zealand and Canada from November 5 – 9, 2017 for future editorial coverage of the destination highlighting L.A.’s unique urban adventures, healthy dining and wellness activities. The group’s educational itinerary showcased ‘only-in-L.A.’ experiences including LazRfit, a guided run led by Blacklist LA; a Venice Beach bike tour with Cartwheel Art Tours; Cirque School; outdoor rock climbing with Rock N Rope Adventures; a Malibu Wine Hike; and, surfing with Aqua Surf School. Media enjoyed healthy dining options at Jane Q, Plant Food and Wine, juice tasting at Moon Juice, The Malibu Café, Carbon Beach Club and Malibu Farm Restaurant. Accommodations were hosted by Kimpton Everly Hotel in Hollywood and Malibu Beach Inn. Coverage is expected to publish in their respective media outlets within the coming months.
The Communications team hosted freelance journalist Natasha Smith November 11 –16, 2017 as she was on a Harper’s Bazaar assignment for an article about unique L.A. experiences. Natasha’s experiences included visits to The Broad, OUE Skyspace LA and Malibu Wine Safaris. Natasha’s coverage about Los Angele will post on Harper’s Bazaar online within the coming months.
The popular Chinese travel show “Whale Travel Rankings,” airing on Travel Channel China, filmed at several L.A. Tourism member locations throughout Los Angeles Nov. 9 –18, 2017, as secured by the Communications team. The three-episode Los Angeles feature will highlight some of the city’s best of hotels, dining, attractions and arts & culture. ‘Only in L.A.’ locales and setting to be showcased include: InterContinental Century City, Hotel Angeleno, Dream Hollywood Hotel, Kimpton Everly Hotel, Hollywood Roosevelt, Millennium Biltmore Hotel, Getty Center, Petersen Automotive Museum, Walt Disney Concert Hall, Westfield Century City, Warner Bros. Studio Tour, OUE Skyspace LA, Griffith Observatory, Dolby Theatre, 71Above, The Original Farmers Market and Takami Sushi. The expected advertising equivalency value for this opportunity is expected to be $10 million with 19 million viewers.
A group of eight media from France visited Los Angeles Nov. 23-26, 2017 for future editorial coverage of the destination. L.A. Tourism’s Communications team secured the group’s experiences at Malibu Wine Tasting, the Restaurant at Mama Shelter, Warner Bros. Studio Tour, Broken Shaker at Freehand Hotel Los Angeles and 71 Above. Accommodations were hosted by Loews Hollywood Hotel.
Lastly, the team tapped L.A. tastemaker Dr. Woo – a native Angeleno, son of immigrants and tattoo artist with more than 1 million Instagram followers – to serve as an L.A. spokesperson for L.A.’s creative scene in Sydney. Known to have a two-year wait list, the team developed a compelling consumer “call-to-action” of free tattoos for one-day-only in Sydney, compliments of Discover Los Angeles. The hook? The tattoos had to be L.A.-inspired.
Nearly 300 Sydneysiders lined up for a chance to win a tattoo as they filled out a form describing their L.A.-inspired tattoo idea; Dr. Woo selected five winners – La Brea Tar Pits, Watts Towers, wallpaper from the Chateau Marmont, a scene from Pulp Fiction (shot in L.A.) and the word “fearless,” used to describe creatives living in L.A. trying to fulfill their dreams. The initiative generated more than $1 million in earned media value, 65 million impressions and almost 200 stories highlighting L.A.’s creative scene.
