Sister Cities of Los Angeles in Berlin

The Sister Cities of Los Angeles organized a mission to Berlin, Germany to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Berlin-Los Angeles sister city partnership July 4-7, 2017. Mayor Eric Garcetti led a delegation of 50 government, civic and business leaders for a three-day program promoting stronger ties between Berlin and L.A. by providing a platform for bilateral cooperation in business, innovation, sustainability, transportation, aviation and tourism. In support of Germany’s travel trade, L.A. Tourism hosted a Discover L.A. reception for 70 trade partners and media at the Frank Gehry-designed Axica and shared an updated destination overview. In celebration of Air Berlin’s direct service to LAX, a trip to L.A. on the airline was given away as a prize.

Brand USA Korea Sales Mission

L.A. Tourism’s South Korea representative Yae Hwon Kim participated in Brand USA’s Korea Sales Mission July 12 – 13, 2017. Kim shared the latest L.A. and LAX updates with travel trade representatives while enhancing relationships with agents to increase visitation from the region. She also participated in a welcome dinner, market-briefing for Korea, travel mart sessions and more. Partners including Universal Studios Hollywood, Warner Bros. Studio Tour Hollywood, Go Card, Westin Bonaventure, Hotel Indigo, Hilton Los Angeles and Starline Tours provided prizes for the training sessions. A ‘Welcome to USA Theater’ themed dinner was held and featured ‘La La Land’ performance dancers. A total 22 airlines partners, DMOs, hotels attended the Brand USA mission, which attracted 38 Korean travel agencies.  

US Aju Tours Office Visit

L.A. Tourism’s Stephanie Nakasone and Wendy Song Dowling visited the US Aju Tours office, a local Korean tour operator, and met with the company’s operation managers. Staff shared updates on the Korean visitor market including trends and visitor demographics. L.A. visitor guides, maps and pocket guides in Korean and other resources were delivered to the agency.

L.A. Tourism’s Australia office, in partnership with LAWA, co-sponsored the annual United Airlines travel agent training seminar in Brisbane, Queensland on July 19, 2017. Travel Trade Manager Carolyn Nightingale promoted key L.A. updates such as new hotel developments and LAX’s modernization to more than 100 top-selling travel agents from leading agency brands such as Flight Centre and Helloworld. Nightingale also promoted United’s daily services from both Sydney and Melbourne to LAX. L.A. Tourism members Loews Hollywood Hotel, Starline Tours and Warner Bros. Studio Tour Hollywood generously provided prize donations for the top sellers.

L.A. Tourism’s Australia office attended the annual Australian Federation of Travel Agents National Travel Industry Awards (AFTA NTIA) in Sydney on July 22, 2017. Australia Regional Director Craig Gibbons and Travel Trade Manager Carolyn Nightingale were nominated on behalf of Los Angeles Tourism for ‘Best Foreign Tourism Board 2017.’ L.A. Tourism was the only CVB nominated against national tourism boards including Tourism New Zealand, which won the award. L.A. Tourism leveraged the AFTA Awards event to entertain key clients and partners from Excite Holidays, Helloworld, Warner Bros. Studio Tour Hollywood, United Airlines, Freestyle Holidays and Virtuoso.

Visit California Sales Mission

L.A. Tourism’s Europe Sales & Marketing Manager Hayley French joined a delegation of 25 California destinations, attractions and suppliers for Visit California’s UK & Ireland Sales Mission. Hayley met with key tour operators, airlines and 150 travel agents to provide destination L.A. updates during the week-long mission that visited three cities in two countries. Visit California also hosted a VIP event, ‘California: Designing Freedom,’ at the Design Museum where Discover L.A. provided a prize of (2) tickets to Los Angeles Rams vs. Arizona Cardinals football game playing in the U.K. this October.

Invited by U.S. Consulate General Shenyang, L.A. Tourism’s Beijing office showcased the destination at the Celebration of the 241st Independence Day in Shenyang on July 6, 2017. The celebration event attracted more than 600 people.

L.A. Tourism’s Beijing office conducted an in-house training at Liaoning Comfort Travel, one of the biggest package tours wholesalers in Northeast China, on July 7, 2017. Staff shared destination updates on air service, LAX’s modernization, L.A.’s attractions, events and dining to more than 50 sales representatives.  Liaoning Comfort Travel specializes in group tours, tailor-made tours and FIT tours.

L.A. Tourism’s Shanghai office conducted an in-house training at LY.com, one of the leading OTAs in China market, on July 11, 2017. Staff presented the latest L.A. happenings including LAX’s modernization, air service updates, TMD hotels, outdoor experiences, dining, culture and attractions to 70 planning managers and senior sales managers. Approximately 20,000 visitors booked tours to L.A. through LY.com’s platform in 2016.

L.A. Tourism’s Beijing office delivered a presentation at Aijiatu.com about current and future air services between LAX and China, LAX's modernization, and updates on L.A.’s attractions, events, dining and shopping on July 12, 2017. More than 30 sales representatives attended the training.

Shenzhen Agent Visit
L.A. Tourism’s Guangzhou office conducted sales visits on July 13, 2017 to five travel agents in Shenzhen including L'AMOUR VOYAGE, specializing in upscale tailor-made travel; Dearisland, focusing on high-end travel; Teyou Travel Group, MICE and corporate travel specialists; Kingsway Group, a leading wholesaler for North American tours; and Bravolinks, a leading MICE company. During the sales visits, staff shared the latest L.A. updates and happenings including LAX’s Private Suites, new dining and retail options, and upcoming attractions, events, and TMD hotels.

L.A. Tourism’s China offices, in partnership with Universal Studios Hollywood, co-hosted “Despicable M3” screenings for travel trade partners across three cities July 15-17, 2017. Staff shared updates on L.A.’s upcoming attractions, hotels, tour products with more than 300 total trade reps before each of the screenings.

L.A. Tourism and Footmark Travel presented gold medal prizes to designers of Tailor-made L.A. Products on July 16, 2017. Ten winners were selected after a campaign to design tailor-made L.A. tour products for 70 participants from tier 2 and tier 3 Chinese travel agencies.

Fuzhou & Xiamen Trainings

L.A. Tourism’s Guangzhou office, in partnership with Xiamen Airlines, co-hosted in-house trainings July 25-27, 2017 at five key travel agencies in Fuzhou and Xiamen following the launch of the airlines new route from Xiamen to LAX. Staff shared detailed updates on LAX’s modernization, TMD hotels, L.A.’s attractions and upcoming events to more than 230 sales managers and operators from Fujian Comfort International Travel Service, Inc.; Xiamen Airlines International Travel Service Co., Ltd.; China International Travel Service (Fujian) Co., Ltd.; China Travel Service Xiamen; and Xiamen C & D International Travel Service Group Co., Ltd.  The XMN-LAX direct flight was launched on June 27, flying three times weekly.

L.A. Tourism’s Australia office exhibited at the inaugural Get Global, a MICE trade show, at the Sydney International Convention Centre on July 28, 2017. The team conducted 25 B2B appointments and provided information about ‘only-in-L.A.’ venues and event ideas as well as L.A.’s new array of hotel developments.  This new trade show targeting outbound incentive & event based travel attracted more than 250 leading MICE buyers from Australia & New Zealand.

Taste of Waldorf – Day in L.A.
L.A. Tourism’s Communications team partnered with Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills for their “Taste of Waldorf” media event on July 11, 2017. The team hosted a ‘Day in L.A.’ press trip to showcase L.A.’s culinary hotspots and emerging neighborhoods which included a tour and tasting of Nancy Silverton’s anticipated Arts District warehouse Nancy’s Fancy, a tour of City Market South in the Fashion District and dinner at Rossoblu. Participating media included Food & Wine, New York Post, Cool Hunting, Huffington Post, Gulf News (UAE) and The Daily Meal. Coverage resulting from this trip has already been published in New York Post (print and online) and additional coverage is forthcoming.
