Car Free LA Tour: The Music

We're showcasing one of our new self-guided "car free" vacation itineraries that offer a new way to experience the hidden gems of LA’s diverse neighborhoods via foot, bike and Metro. The "LA Music" itinerary will take us from Hollywood to venues along the Sunset Strip and end at Amoeba Music.

WHEN: Sunday, May 19 at 9:30 a.m. till 2 p.m. (or whenever you get tired)

WHERE: Michael Jackson’s star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (in front of the Chinese Theatre). Conveniently located next to the Hollywood/Highland Metro Station (Red Line). There is paid parking available at Hollywood & Highland or simply take Metro.

HOW: We’ll be walking and using Metro to get up and down the Sunset Strip before ending at Amoeba Music. Bring comfortable walking shoes, a Metro Day Pass, sunscreen and your phone for Instagramming #CarFreeLA photos all day!

The latest in UCLA’s Why History Matters series, this panel discussion looks at the future of the Los Angeles mosaic and the place of Jews within it, in light of the history presented in the exhibition Jews in the Los Angeles Mosaic. Panelists will reflect on life in a diverse and cosmopolitan metropolis, while considering the struggle of choosing between integration and the drawing of community boundaries.

Moderated by Rob Eshman, publisher and editor-in-chief, Tribe Media Corporation and the Jewish Journal, this program features Rabbi Sharon Brous of IKAR; philanthropist David Lonner, founder of Oasis Media Group; David Myers, chair of the UCLA History Department and former director of the UCLA Center for Jewish Studies; and Councilwoman Jan Perry.

Maggids of Memory: Bruce Phillips

Bruce Phillips, professor at Hebrew Union College, demographer and historian of American Jewish life, will speak about his father Bill Phillips, who owned Phillips’ Music Store in Boyle Heights.
