Join us for the opening reception of Don Kennell "Bird's the Word".
The Lois Lambert Gallery presents a new collection of sculptures titled, “Bird's the Word” by Don Kennell.
Working with upcycled sheet metal, copper, and steel found along the highway during his travels in the West, Kennell has created a collection of 25 bird sculptures.
Kennell's many car trips inspired him to create sculptures that, for the artist, embody the spirit of the West, and symbolize the freedom of the open road. The lettering and brilliant colors Kennell paints on the wings and bodies of his sculptures are homage to the traffic signs that dot the highway. Scrambling the text encourages the viewer to interact with the artwork and decipher it's meaning. For Kennell, upcycling and art go hand in hand.
Don Kennell received his BFA from The University of Houston, and his MFA from Rutgers University. Following his graduation with an MFA, Kennell exhibited his work on the East Coast before moving to his current home in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He has received numerous commissions, most recently, a sculpture called “Yard Dog”, a 20 foot long steel dog sculpture with porch swing seating shown at the Coachella Music Festival in Indio California in 2013. He has been invited to return to Coachella again this year with a new installation. He has had work featured in numerous art exhibits in New Mexico that deal with naturalistic themes as well as exhibiting in Colorado and Utah.
