The E-flat Quintet is a unique marvel. “I myself consider it to be the best work I have ever composed,” Mozart told his father after its well-received premiere in 1784. The unusual instrumentation gives the piece a kaleidoscopic, constantly shifting aural surface, as Mozart worked hard to keep the four winds balanced in sound and presence, with the piano as a common background.
