Arcadia, CA (May 6, 2013) The SCHAS Daylily and Bulb Society is pleased to present Professor Harold Koopowitz in a talk entitled: “Growing Daffodils in Southern California.” The lecture will take place at 10am on Saturday, May 18, 2013, at the Los Angeles County Arboretum & Botanic Garden’s Palm Room (301 N. Baldwin in Arcadia). Admission is free to first-time guests. Attendees are invited to bring copies of any of the Professor’s books for signing after the talk. No books will be available for sale. About the speaker: Professor Koopowitz grew up in South Africa, where he attended university, majoring in both Botany and Zoology. In 1968, he completed a doctorate at UCLA. A professor at the University of California at Irvine since graduating, he was also the Director of the UCI Arboretum for twenty years. He is now Professor Emeritus of Biology in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at UCI, where he did research on conservation and ecology. Prof. Koopowitz has written a number of books on Conservation as well as Breeding Orchids. He is also author of a book on Clivias. At present, he is working on a book about Autumn Flowering Daffodils and another, a collection of short fiction stories that involve orchids. The Professor continues to garden in Tustin, Orange County, and is well known internationally for breeding both Slipper Orchids and Miniature Daffodils. He is Editor Emeritus for the Orchid Digest which he edited for ten years. Currently, he is first Vice-President of the American Daffodil Society. All are invited to attend SCHAS meetings to learn about Daylilies, other Flowering Bulbs, and our club. Meetings are held at 10 a.m. every 3rd Saturday of the month at the L.A. County Arboretum & Botanic Garden - Palm Room. SCHAS programs feature speakers with power point photo presentations and an educational show & tell flower session.
