Venice Beach’s colorful Ocean Front Walk, art murals, Muscle Beach and skatepark are some of the top attractions in Los Angeles. Although there are plenty of boutique and luxury hotels near these tourist spots, the five properties listed below are among the more affordable options.

Inn at Venice Beach

Located within easy walking distance of Venice Beach attractions like Ocean Front Walk and Muscle Beach, this 43-room inn now sports a boutique-style makeover. Think mid-century black and white photography mixed with a color palate of neutral grays and bright orange. Loft suites include a private upstairs bedroom area, with a sleeper sofa downstairs; standard guest rooms are available as well. Parking is only $11 per night. Free perks include freshly baked cookies in the lobby every day at 3pm, a Continental breakfast each morning and WiFi.

Distance from Venice Beach: Less than a mile, but on the way there are a variety of fun side trips, such as strolling along the Venice Canals and checking out the Venice Fishing Pier.

Jolly Roger Hotel

A Marina Del Rey motor lodge near the Venice border, the Jolly Roger has been a reliable spot for a budget-friendly stay since 1970. Look for an array of flags waving along the off-white building with dark brown trim. Indeed, many international visitors take advantage of the reasonable rates and proximity to the beach. Each of the 85 rooms includes a refrigerator and microwave, and laundry facilities are available for guest use. Perks include free covered parking, WiFi and a Continental breakfast. The pool is heated, and there is a hot tub as well.

Distance from Venice Beach: Depending on the route, it’s between one and one-half miles to two miles, about five minutes by car or 15 on foot. Detour up and around trendy Abbot Kinney.

Best Western Plus, Marina Del Rey

Done up in striking royal blue and stark-white hues, this boutique-style hotel looks more like a cool condo complex, thanks to a complete overhaul in 2011. A total of 68 guestrooms include 36 suites. Each comes standard with a microwave and fridge. Free perks include WiFi, parking, local phone calls, daily breakfast, and cookies at check-in. Mountain bike rentals are available at the front desk for a nominal fee, either for a three-hour period or a full day. The property features a heated outdoor pool, Jacuzzi and fitness center, and has received the Best Western Chairman Award—only given to the top five percent of hotels in the chain.

Distance from Venice Beach: It’s less than one and one-half miles, with several different options, either trekking past the beach-y bars and eateries on Washington, or through the canals.

Hotel MdR Marina del Rey – A DoubleTree By Hilton

Because this marina-adjacent property functions primarily as a business hotel, the rates sometimes drop on weekends, making it ideal for last-minute trips to LA with the kids. All 277 guestrooms were renovated in 2012, and come equipped with a mini-fridge and coffeemaker. Among onsite amenities are free WiFi, as well as free coffee every morning in the lobby. There’s an outdoor heated pool and hot tub, and an exercise room onsite. Beach cruisers are available for a surcharge. Dining options include the Yard House and a convenience shop called the Market, which is open 24 hours daily. Note that the hotel is located in a mall with a movie theater, too.

The turn of the century building has been renovated to offer 25 studio suites with kitchenettes and private bathrooms. Amenities like WiFi, local phone calls and a small TV are included, as are borrowable beach accessories and sports equipment in the lobby.
