Yayoi Kusama's Infinity Mirror Rooms at The Broad

Located on Grand Avenue in Downtown LA, The Broad is a spectacular contemporary art museum built by philanthropists Eli and Edythe Broad. The museum is home to 2,000 works of art in the Broad collection, which is among the most prominent holdings of postwar and contemporary art in the world.

Two of the famed Infinity Mirror Rooms by Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama are in The Broad's permanent collection. One of the most popular artworks on view at The Broad, Infinity Mirrored Room – The Souls of Millions of Light Years Away (2013) is a mirror-lined chamber populated with a dazzling and seemingly vast array of LED lights, creating a sense of limitless space.
“Our Infinity Mirrored Room has become a cultural phenomenon and many of our visitors are extremely passionate about Kusama’s work,” said Joanne Heyler, founding director of The Broad.
Installed on the first floor, this immersive artwork requires a separate free reservation. Timed tickets for “Infinity Mirrored Room + General Admission” are released monthly and available at The Broad website. Both General Admission and "Infinity Mirrored Room + General Admission" tickets are released at 10 a.m. PT on the last Wednesday of the month for visiting the following month.
NOTE: This installation is a mirror-lined room with flashing LED lights that you physically enter with a door that closes behind you. If you're uncomfortable with flashing lights and/or enclosed, dark spaces, The Broad recommends bypassing this experience.
The museum's second Infinity Mirror Room installation, Longing for Eternity (2017) is located on the third floor. The Broad describes the experience: "From outside Longing for Eternity, viewers can peer through porthole-like windows into the dazzling, LED light–filled hexagonal chamber. … Through extreme repetition, both types of Kusama’s Infinity Mirror Rooms create phenomenological experiences that provoke a sense of boundlessness and transcendence."

In a Q&A with The Broad, Kusama says that "infinity" has always been part of her worldview: "Eternal unlimited universe, love for humanity, and longing for peace in the world—these concepts become increasingly serious through the development of my philosophy of life and art."
Kusama adds, "I integrate my philosophy about the eternity of interrelationships into my artworks. You can share the information, but the experience is your own. I wish you will come to experience my artwork at The Broad."
