The groundbreaking comedian brings her signature socio-political humor to The Wiltern on Friday, Dec. 6. Cho’s all-new stand up show, aptly named “MOTHER,” is her untraditional look at motherhood and how society looks at maternal figures and strong women in queer culture. It’s one of her edgiest shows, touching on everything from race and drugs to politics and sexuality.
Dec. 7: Holiday Boat Parade Viewing Party at Battleship IOWA
Celebrating its 51st year with the theme of “Holidays Around the World,” the Los Angeles Harbor Holiday Afloat marks the beginning of the holiday season for LA Harbor boaters, the surrounding communities of Wilmington, San Pedro, and the beach cities of the South Bay. Thousands of spectators watch the mile-long procession from public viewing stations along the route, including Battleship IOWA. The viewing party includes holiday music, "Kids Korner" hosted by CRAFTED, San Pedro Nutcracker ballet characters, complimentary cocoa, coffee and cookies, food cart treats, and photos with Santa Claus.
Dec. 7: 24th Annual KROQ Almost Acoustic Christmas
The 24th Annual KROQ Almost Acoustic Christmas returns to the historic Shrine Auditorium on Dec. 7 and 8, featuring two nights of performances from many of today’s biggest bands, including Kings of Leon, Vampire Weekend, Arcade Fire, Phoenix, and Queens of the Stone Age. Proceeds benefit local charities, Para Los Niños and the Al Wooten Jr. Heritage Center.
On Sunday, Dec. 8, The Autry in Griffith Park celebrates Las Posadas, the Mexican tradition in which children portray Mary and Joseph seeking shelter in Bethlehem as baby Jesus is about to be born, while innkeepers urge them in song to move on. The evening features dances by Grandeza Mexicana Folk Ballet Company, performances by Harmonies Girls Choir, and more. Las Posadas takes place from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and is included with museum admission, or free for Autry members.
Some of LA’s top chefs and bartenders are donating their time and talents for #LALovesPI, a fundraising event taking place on Dec. 8 at The Church Key in West Hollywood to support Typhoon Haiyan relief efforts in the Philippines. All proceeds from #LALovesPI are being donated to Gawad Kalinga, a Philippine-based grassroots organization and non-profit that is currently assisting with relief efforts in the heart of Typhoon Haiyan disaster sites.
