Celebrate Awards Season in Los Angeles

Every year during awards season, Los Angeles rolls out the red carpet for the entertainment industry, media and fans from around the world. Throughout the city, special events and cultural attractions celebrate the highest achievements in movies, television and music.

The 96th Academy Awards will take place on March 10 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, the permanent home of the ceremony since 2002. Jimmy Kimmel will host the Oscars for the fourth time.

Oppenheimer leads this year's field with 13 nominations, followed by Poor Things (11 nods) and Killers of the Flower Moon (10). With her Best Actress nomination, Killers of the Flower Moon star Lily Gladstone became the first Native American acting nominee. Martin Scorsese received his 10th Best Director nomination, and at age 81 is now the oldest nominee in that category. American Fiction stars Jeffrey Wright and Sterling K. Brown became the first Black actors in the Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor categories, respectively, to be nominated for the same film.

At last year's ceremony, Everything Everywhere All at Once won seven Oscars: Best Picture, Best Director (The Daniels), Best Actress (Michelle Yeoh), Best Supporting Actor (Ke Huy Quan), Best Supporting Actress (Jamie Lee Curtis), Best Original Screenplay (The Daniels) and Best Editing (Paul Rogers).

Yeoh made Oscars history as the first Asian woman to win Best Actress: "For all the little boys and girls who look like me watching tonight, this is a beacon of hope and possibility. This is proof that dreams dream big and dreams do come true," she said in her acceptance speech. "And ladies, don’t let anyone ever tell you you’re past your prime."

The 81st Annual Golden Globe Awards took place at the Beverly Hilton on January 7. Bestowed by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), the Golden Globes recognize excellence in film and television, both domestic and foreign.

Oppenheimer won five Golden Globes - the most for any film - including Best Motion Picture, Drama; Christopher Nolan for Best Director, acting trophies for Cillian Murphy (Best Actor, Drama) and Robert Downey Jr (Best Supporting Actor); and Ludwig Göransso for Best Original Score. Going into the ceremony, Greta Gerwig's Barbie led the field with nine nods, and won two awards: the new Cinematic and Box Office Achievement; and Best Original Song, “What Was I Made For?” by Billie Eilish and Finneas. In its final season, Succession won four Golden Globes, including Best Drama Series.

Two actresses made history at the ceremony: Ali Wong (Beef) is the first actor of Asian descent to win Best Actress in a Limited Series; and with her win for Best Actress in a Motion Picture, Drama, Lily Gladstone (Killers of the Flower Moon) became the first Indigenous actor to win a Golden Globe. Gladstone spoke in Blackfeet to begin her powerful acceptance speech.

The 66th GRAMMY Awards took place on February 4 at Crypto.com Arena, with Trevor Noah hosting for the fourth time.

Taylor Swift's Midnights won Album of the Year, making her the first artist in GRAMMY history to win the award four times, surpassing music legends Frank Sinatra, Paul Simon and Stevie Wonder. In the remaining "Big Four" categories, Miley Cyrus's "Flowers" won Record of the Year; Billie Eilish and Finneas won Song of the Year for "What Was I Made For?" from the Barbie soundtrack; and Victoria Monét was named Best New Artist.

Performance highlights included folk music icon Joni Mitchell taking the GRAMMY stage for the first time to sing "Both Sides, Now"; and Tracy Chapman and Luke Combs with a beautiful duet of "Fast Car."

Los Angeles has a long tradition of hosting awards ceremonies, but there's nothing traditional about the Film Independent Spirit Awards, which returned in-person to the beach at Santa Monica Pier on March 4, 2023.

For the first time in its 38-year history, the Spirit Awards acting categories were gender neutral - the former separate lead and supporting actor and actress categories were replaced across film and TV by the ten-nominee Best Lead and Best Supporting Performance awards.

Everything Everywhere All At Once led the film nominations with eight nods, and won seven: Best Feature, Best Director (The Daniels), Best Lead Performance (Michelle Yeoh), Best Supporting Performance (Ke Huy Quan), Best Breakthrough Performance (Stephanie Hsu), Best Screenplay and Best Editing.

Women Talking was named the winner of the Robert Altman Award, presented to a film’s director, casting director and ensemble cast.

Hulu's The Bear received two awards - Best New Scripted Series and Best Supporting Performance in a New Scripted Series for Ayo Edebiri.
